| Company 46 Tours Kutztown Foundry |
Thu. Jul 29th 2010
For our weekly training night, the Company toured the McConway & Torley Railcar Products foundry as part of an annual safety initiative. The main goal of this year's tour was to recognize and educate the safety aspects of a possible confined space rescue operation. Crews from Company 46 also learned a lot about the daily operations of the foundry and a little about metallurgy. Overall, the tour was extremely informative and several risks and hazards were identified that could create impediments to rescue crews should a rescue ever need to take place at the plant.
Company 46 will be returning to the foundry in the near future, when the weather is cooler, to perform a confined space rescue drill in cooperation with McConway & Torley.
Thanks, again, to the management and employees at McConway & Torley Railcar Products for their hospitality and initiative to continue a strong working relationship with our emergency responders!

| Operation Save A Life |
Free smoke alarms are being made available through a program coordinated by the Pennsylvania Fire Commissioner and WFMZ-TV, 69 News. The long-life lithium battery detectors are part of a grant program intended to help low income residents, the elderly, and families with children. WFMZ-TV has dubbed the program, Operation Save a Life. The terms of the grant require local fire departments to physically install the detectors in residents' homes, and the Kutztown Fire Company has volunteered to do the work. There are a limited number of detectors available. In order to apply to receive free detectors, visit the WFMZ website at www.wfmz.com/sponsors/23003153/detail.html, or for a Spanish translation of the application form, go to www.wfmz.com/sponsors/23199039/detail.html.
If you are selected to participate in the program, you will be contacted by a representative of the fire department. Please ask for ID before allowing anyone into your home.
